Finally, after months of delays, again, The Innocence Project is ready to submit their 696 application to the Convictions Review Group.

In addition, the Saskatchewan Justice Department has sent confirmation regarding Supreme Court rules in this province which states that Leon's case does not have to be heard by the Supreme Court prior to being reviewed by the Convictions Review Group.

Once this 696 application is submitted and the review commences, Leon will have the opportunity to apply for bail pending the Review Group's decision. We are confident that this would be a successful court application.

The application being filed is very favorable to Leon in proving his innocence. The scientific evidence contained in this application can not be refuted and this continuing cover up will not continue.

Another Step Closer

The latest news regarding Leon's case is a only a small step, but nevertheless, a step closer to freedom.

The Innocence Project is waiting for a letter from the Saskatchewan government pertaining to Supreme Court Laws in this province. Once the letter is received, Leon's application will be filed with the Convictions Review Group. We trust the Saskatchewan government will act in a timely fashion and respond as soon as possible.

Retainer money has been sent to a very prominent attorney who has worked on numerous wrongful convictions. It is our hope that he will begin the preliminary work on Leon's bail application and therefore once the 696 application is filed, the bail application will be ready to be heard by the Court.

Finally, after 8 long, miserable years, it looks like the clock is ticking down and Leon will be home soon!!

Yesterday we had the greatest news in 8 years. The Innocence Project is diligently working on Leon's application to the Federal Minister of Justice and should be presentable within the next 2 months. Following the submission to the Minister of Justice, we have high confidence that a successful bail hearing will follow shortly thereafter.

As Leon and all those with even the slightest amount of common sense once again rejoice with "the truth shall set you free".

Wrongful Conviction Presentation an Obvious Success

PETER WARREN's presentation as well as the presentations given by three family members of wrongfully convicted men was a complete success. Those present, including the media were appalled that convictions in our system could happen this way despite the evidence that clearly shows these men are NOT guilty of the crimes that they are paying for.

It was, for me, a great experience to meet the family members of Michael Tate and Kelvin Purdy and to hear their stories. The parallels in all three cases are uncanny with "missing evidence", "police tunnel vision" and "conviction by the media", just to name three. Yes, the list goes on. But, the biggest thing we all have in common is that we will NEVER give up fighting, we will NEVER be quiet and we will see JUSTICE!!!

Thanks, Peter, for your endless work in organizing this and for the media interviews regarding our cases before and since the presentation.

UNIVERSITY OF VICTORIA FACULTY OF LAW PRESENTATION

MARCH 27, 2008 at 7:30pm at the University of Victoria faculty of law Room 159 of the Fraser Building, PETER WARREN will be speaking out about the wrongful convictions he has aided with over the years as well as the three cases he is currently working on. Featured will be the cases of Michael Tate, Kelvin Purdy, and Leon Walchuk. Family members from each case will also be speaking. Those include Michael's father, John, Kelvin's stepfather, and Leon's fiancee, Nancy. All public and media are welcome and encouraged. This shall definitely make an impact on these wrongful convictions and bring the deserved public attention to light.

It should also show our "governing" bodies that we, the families of these unjustly convicted men will not "go quietly into the good night" and we will continue to fight for justice. Once and for all our justice system must see that mistakes happen and that they are obligated to correct the errors.

Indefinite Delay

By the looks of things, there will be an indefinite delay with the publishing of Peter Warren's articles. On the upside, Peter was featured last evening on Victoria's CFAX radio program "The Buzz" and he spoke about the three cases he is working on, including Leon's. I'm sure the response will be as positive as the other times he's been on air!

Public Awareness Through The Media

To start....MERRY CHRISTMAS to all and prayers that 2008 will be a good year for everyone!!

Starting tomorrow, there will be a three part series called "Were They Wrongfully Convicted?" appearing in "The Times Colonist" from Victoria, BC. The author of these powerful articles is none other than Peter Warren.

If you are interested in reading these articles, you may access them from the canada.com website. Leon's case will be featured as will the cases of Kelvin Purdy and Michael Tate. I ask our readers to please take the time and read the articles on all three of these wrongly convicted persons.

Progress With The Innocence Project

In the near future the Director of The Innocence Project is meeting with Kerry Scullion from the Convictions Review Group to discuss Leon's case. The Innocence Project has also decided to obtain another fire expert to collaborate Dr. Gerald Hurst's findings. They believe that having an additional expert opinion will add to the strength of Leon's case and will make for a much stronger 696.1 application.

Steven Truscott

Congratulations to Steven Truscott, his family, and supporters! Your horribly long battle is over and you have won. The relief you feel, we also feel. You give renewed hope that our own fight will not be in vain and that we too will soon have our day. As was said this morning "memories fade over time, science improves over time". The improvements in science will be Leon's salvation also. People can say and "remember" what ever they want, but science can not and will not be tricked. It is the be all and the end all and as in the Truscott case; science is the truth.

RCMP Tried to Destroy More Evidence

Despite numerous letters to Crown Prosecutor, Todd Wellsch, the Courthouse, the RCMP, and a subsequent application to the Court requesting the return of personal items that were seized during the investigation, I found out today that the cops were one step away from having everything destroyed. These were the same evidentiary items that formed the basis for a charge of 1st degree murder. Had it not been for Leon's daughter stalling their efforts by requesting access to those items, the letter from the Convictions Review Group ordering all exhibits frozen and to never be destroyed would have arrived too late and this evidence, which could help prove Leon to be innocent, would have been placed along side the missing hockey stick, missing wedding matches, missing photo negatives, missing personal belongings of Cori including the car keys, missing police reports, and of course the missing car. Quite the collection! Why would the RCMP still try to destroy evidence when they were fully aware that the conviction was in question and that a subsequent judicial review would occur? Obviously, they are still hiding and covering up for the corruption that occurred in this investigation.

There you go "disasterstruck", the name of the cop. This site has no problem publishing the truth. His name is also mentioned in the website along with a photo. He made his own statement to another investigator which says "Dingle said he was with Cori Walchuk and indicated that she had been drinking at his home last night." Cori also admitted that same story to her cousin telling her about the "rendezvous" and that she didn't get home until almost 5 am March 30, 1998. The early morning of the day this happened.
You also seem to have lost some of your own conviction about Leon being proven innocent.......even you are now saying "if he comes out" It used to be "he'll never come out, end of story"
And as far as the children go, you shouldn't listen to everything you hear. The kids have a tough enough time dealing with people like you that are constantly filling their heads with lies and kicking their self-esteem when they mention anything positive about their father. Do you really think they're going to tell you the truth about the relationship they have with their dad.
I encourage you to continue writing your "way out there" letters about what can only be a figment of your imagination as you can't back any of it with hard evidence. Rumors don't cut it at this stage of the legal game. It not only gives more credibility to our Fight For Freedom, but gives more leads to our investigators who continue to find more corruption and cover-up.

Another eye opener program from Mike McIntyre, host of "Crime and Punishment" when he interviewed investigative journalist, Peter Warren on Sunday about information he has found in regards to Leon Walchuk's wrongful conviction. Leon's estranged wife's relationship with a RCMP officer, who by the way, was the first cop at the scene that fateful night, was compared to that of a "movie of the week". Movie of the week?? I say more like a bad soap opera!

By request of the Convictions Review Group, Leon Walchuk has provided them with written permission to release information to The Innocence Project. The Innocence Project is an organization from Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto, ON, where law students volunteer their time examining cases of wrongfully convicted people. They also assist with investigating, proof finding and legal assistance. The Innocence Project is currently aiding Leon by researching the mounds of legal documents, trial transcripts, and of course the new scientific evidence that proves Leon was wrongly convicted.

Wow! Finally someone had the guts to speak the truth!! Peter Warren, investigative journalist, spoke out on Susan Woods radio program "Remember When" on Victoria, BC radio station CFAX. He spoke about his involvement with investigating Leon's case and some of the interesting things he has found out. He openly mentioned the biased police investigation and the reasons why; citing Cori's "personal" involvement with a member or members of the local detachment.

Since there will be many advances with Leon's case in the next few months, we've decided to create a blog in hopes that it will be an easier way for everyone to stay current. His case is currently being reviewed by the Convictions Review Group and by the end of summer we hope to hear that it has passed to the investigative stage of the review process. The new scientific evidence is exculpatory and proves Leon's innocence.
